HIGHLY RECOMMENDED...Bloody Brilliant,..Barely a week after Scott Weinstein picked up the Jeff Award for best direction of a musical he has sent Griffin Theatre’s Chicago premiere of “Bat Boy: The Musical” flying with all the force of the proverbial bat out of Hell. This show is nothing short of sensational; from the moment you enter its cave-like environment you ll be caught up in its giant webbed wings. Part “wild child” tale, part Greek tragedy, part Frankenstein monster story, part Bible Belt fable (and more), the show, which is being brilliantly performed, is alternately heart-breaking and hilarious.

Hamilton can wait, see BAT BOY now. This production does just about everything right!

CRITIC’S PICK... A strong production by Griffin Theatre gives life to the macabre half bat, half boy invented by the Weekly World News. Bat Boy receiving its professional Chicago premiere, in a well-sung, high-energy production by the Griffin Theatre Company. I don’t know why it’s taken so long for this oddball, engaging if macabre cult item to make its way here, but it was worth the wait.

CRITIC’S PICK ★★★★....Henry McGinniss is a screeching delight in the title role, evolving from feral to erudite in the course of a few scenes but unable to tamp down his true nature. With a pair of remarkably steadfast prosthetic ears and a deft physicality, McGinniss wins us over to Bat Boy’s side in no time. Anne Sheridan Smith provides valuable pathos as his adoptive mother, and Tiffany Tatreau...gets in some delicious moments as Bat Boy’s adoptive-sister-cum-love-interest.
